Capria - Impact report Cover 0214 September 2016. Bengaluru, India – Unitus Ventures, India’s leading impact venture fund investing in startups innovating for the masses, today released its half-yearly fund and portfolio impact report for 2016. As of 30 June 2016, Unitus’ portfolio of 18 companies have provided services or products reaching out to over 830,000 BoP (base of the economic pyramid) lives across 21 states in India. Unitus registered a 69 percent year-on-year (YoY) growth on impact. Portfolio companies have cumulatively provided employment to 1,496 people; of whom 82 per cent are BoP.

Unitus Ventures’ comprehensive approach goes beyond providing seed capital. We connect portfolio companies with the larger Indian ecosystem to receive growth capital, find business partners and customers, and intensify their mentor-advisor network. From the financial and ecosystem perspective, the portfolio companies have cumulatively raised 3.13x additional capital in follow-on investments and on-boarded 86 advisors and 24 strategic partners, respectively.

Srikrishna Ramamoorthy, Partner at Unitus Ventures said, “Our growing portfolio creates highly scalable and market-based solutions with inherent, built-in social impact. Our efforts to couple them with an increasing network of advisors, investors and strategic partners is enabling us to reach our goal of supporting some of the most sustainable and scalable solutions to pressing social problems across India.”

In terms of measuring impact, Unitus Ventures adopts a well-defined methodology of tracking portfolio companies on three parameters; all of which are measured across company, sector and fund levels, using industry-standard IRIS metrics:

  • Social (scale) – Each portfolio company’s potential to impact at least 100,000 low-income families and/or provide direct employment to a minimum of 1,000 low-income individuals within five years. To date over 830,000 citizens have been touched, averaging 46,000 per active portfolio company. And the growth is accelerating.
  • Financial – Investee companies’ path to financial sustainability through increased revenues and further capital. To date, companies have raised a total of $25mn in follow on capital which is more than 3x Unitus Ventures’s initial investments.
  • Ecosystem – Unitus Ventures’s and every portfolio company’s benefit from influence, and improvement to the functioning of the overall Indian startup ecosystem. More than 110 advisors and strategic partners have been connected to portfolio companies to date.

Since 2013, Unitus has made a total of 23 investments across sectors including Education, Healthcare, Financial Technology, Agriculture, Retail and Ecommerce, Mobile and Consumer.
